This is just a short note to let you know that your website is much appreciated, and has been missed for the last several days. Am hoping that it will be up again soon, because it raises questions that are quite interesting for our times. I suspect that deep down almost everyone agrees that if work is in shortage, or if labour saving devices reduce the need for work, then the work should be shared fairly. Of all the radical ideas that I discuss, this is one that seems to generate the least opposition.
Thank you for the enormous amount of time and effort you have spent to consider and discuss the issues involved. May most of the ideas become self-evident to society soon. Sooner better than later....

Thanks for the great information. My parents are European and they are constantly amazed at how underappreciated the American employee is in comparison to those in Europe.
Perhaps someday, if we keep pushing for it, employers will learn that they get more from their employees if they give more.

"I have decided the current technology job market is absolutely insane. I have been watching it since October 2002 when I was given notice and waiting for some kind of response since December 2002 when I was laid off. Since lots of people are available to be hired, hiring managers seem to be packing all kinds of requirements into their job postings.... Despite all of the people...available to immediately start work...jobs that have been posted for months...never seem to be filled - in some cases a specific job continually gets reposted with more rigid requirements...."
[Our response:]
There are several possible explanations -
- A listing for apparently one job opening only might actually be supplying multiple openings.
- A listing for apparently one type of job may have been found adequate or even useful for supplying several other types of job, and the company wants to 'cut the cost' of constantly tailoring want ads to different specifics.
- The converse of the previous: makework for hiring managers - top mgmt doesn't track its personnel needs too closely and the 'Catberts' in the evil HR Dept. are in an excellent position to entrench and grow their power, and are by no means above developing a 'reserve' of resumés by running stock ads regardless of actual open positions.
- Then there's plain old sloppiness, inattentiveness, need to use a certain amount of contracted space in a given (group of) publication(s) - you get the idea. This type of situation may be in play to explain why "some clients seem to have multiple recruiters hounding for the same job."
  - Or, an HR manager may have overlooked some ads run for too long and then justified them by tightening requirements to fish for The Dream Candidate, that, what the heck, "we might want to hire anyway even with no pressing immediate job req - or ... we might not." That's the thing about a labor surplus. Mgmt power goes up and mgmt skills decline, with no immediate costs - jobseeker power goes down and jobseeker skills go up, without any necessarily immediate benefits.
  - Low-skill managers have a wonderful way to cover their incompetence. Crisis (creation &) management. They generate crises and then surf from one to the other. (Sound familiar to White House watchers?) Then they absolutely NEED NOW to have "multiple recruiters hounding for the same job" as an immediate top all-points priority because "we have a crisis and we must solve it fast, and you're either for us or against us, so shut up and get on board - or beat it!"
  Meanwhile the consumer base is getting weaker and weaker and The Great Leak Upward is splitting society into mutually hostile and ignorant classes and plunging all into the Third World. The usual recent 'solution' is war but that's been discouraged by the quantum leap in the destructiveness of recent weapons and in the vulnerability of modern interdependent societies. An older 'solution' is plague but that's been discouraged by modern medicine. An older but only occasional and unsystematically implemented real solution is worksharing. Systematized and optimized, our design entry in this area is the five-phase Timesizing program.
[Then Matt has 2 additional questions -]
1. "In the past, companies that people wanted to work for never needed to advertise" - #1, in a long-abuilding labor glut, those companies are few and far between because of surplus-candidate spoiled managers and the resulting deterioration of their skills. As overt and hidden unemployment builds, employees who like their jobs (&/or companies) get close-mouthed. You don't crow about how happily employed you are to your unemployed bro-in-law anyway - it's just not nice. So the word-of-mouth thing breaks down. And #2, the specialization of modern jobs requires a wider net for candidates be cast - ergo, that's "why so many companies even need to post jobs."
2. "Then there is the pay issue - the current rates being offered for information technology jobs are little more than the unemployment maximum and less than a fast-food assistant manager." Pure supply and demand. Doesn't matter how important and impressive and costly-in-the-acquisition your skills were 5 years ago. If the market's changed, like by the bursting of the Internet bubble, your skills are a dime a dozen. Anything in surplus is cheap, and much as we would like human skills to be exempt, they aren't. We once believed in a small geocentric universe - we thought the sun, moon and stars all revolved around us too. Then we found out they didn't. It was a big heliocentric solar system in an even bigger Sirius-centered star system in an even bigger black-hole centered galactic system, in a galactic cluster, in a "local" group of clusters, in.... It's up to us to design a sustainable system on our biospheric scale that is repeatedly improvable to keep up with our rising expectations. Again, Timesizing and its successors are the first primitive entries in this project, which you'd think would be much further advanced at the dawn of the Third Millenium after the major injection of sociodiversity occasioned by the birth of the catalyst (the "D." in A.D.) of the loyal opposition of the Political Age (Anthony of Thebes, 260 AD, split the fellowship of the cross into societal accepters {clerics/priests} and rejecters {monastics/monks}) or the Fourteenth Millennium after the minor injection of sociodiversity occasioned by the agricultural revolution. But, long-winded as ever, we're straying into the subject area of the background volume, 'Football of Time', in the 'time trilogy' immediately prior to Timesizing, Not Downsizing - all 3 probably currently available on Amazon.com.

Thanks for the encouragement. Yes, there are certainly occasional opportunities to phone a nearby-Boston company that's planning layoffs and offer them a less traumatic solution, and I even got a call from an employee at a branch of the Boston Public Library a couple of weeks ago. The daily updates of the site though are very demanding and my 'off-hours' priorities right now are to get the pith of the 2 background books (Defining Time, and The 'Football' of History) onto the site as soon as I get word that the copyright office has received them, and apply to some foundation for funding &/or incorporate non-profit to make funding easier....]

"[Timesizing] would certainly seem to be a viable alternative, at least in most cases. It appears to me that you could always try th[e] timesizing first, and consider other methods if that doesn't work. In a majority of cases, it probably would.
However, as long as American business is obsessed with the near term bottom line, it won't happen.
[But note current working models and occasional cases in the news. Sometimes even the near-term bottom line pushes a CEO to resort to offering extra days or weeks of unpaid vacation, as Charles Schwab, or HP, or beyond to flexible adjustment of the workweek, as Nucor, or Lincoln Electric.]
We seem to have forgotten about the future, both in business and in politics. Bush obviously has not concerned himself with the long term effects of going into Iraq against the wishes of most of our allies. He may win that war, but getting help in any others will be a major problem - for his successors. Dumb.

...Essentially I do graphics work and was caught up in the whole website design "gold rush"....although for years I did technical illustration for various area tech companies, for their manuals, etc....Now many large companies are moving all their tech manuals over to the internet rather than making "physical books"...so that biz has changed, too...Talk about acceleration of change! This has all happened in about 5 years...
It's always a comfort to read your site and see that this is not just about individual failure, but rather about macroeconomic and technological trends that are over-riding the old paradigms...

You're assuming, logically, that I copy my news excerpts off the Web. But I don't. To limit my Internet time and save my eyes, I rekey the stories off my hard-copy subscription to the NY Times and my wife's Boston Globe subscription. The convenience I provide is page numbers in the hard copy so old-fashioned researchers can provide standard references (and save their eyes too).

[In response, we made three points -
1. In terms of harsh irrationality, with the most worksaving technology but the least leisure time in the developed world - with the most homelessness, the biggest "drug war" and the largest prison population - we Americans are already living in "A Brave New World."
2. In terms of "continuing" toward disaster, Timesizing actually continues a 164-year-long process of shrinking the workweek. Between 1776 and 1940, the American workweek shrank an average of 15 minutes a year (from seven 12-hour days to 40 hours a week), although some Americans already in 1776 worked only six 12-hour days due to an ancient tradition (from c.1500 BC) called the Fourth Commandment (Exodus 20: 8-11), widely viewed in ancient times with disbelief, derision, and alarm. Only the last 60 years of American history have seen the rigid restriction of the "full time" workweek (e.g., for benefits purposes) to 40-hours-or-higher levels as a result of the poorly designed overtime section of the Democrats' Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938.
3. In terms of over-regulation, one well-designed new groundrule (work sharing) in the center of our economy will enable us to dismantle thousands of regulations everywhere else (e.g., massive wage and job supports).]
